In a significant achievement, Mexico has become the first team to advance to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This milestone was reached after a narrow 1-0 victory over South Korea in Guadalajara. The turning point of the match arrived shortly after the break when a mix-up between South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu and defender Lee Ki-hyuk allowed the ball to land at the feet of Mexico’s Luis Romo. Seizing the opportunity, Romo slotted home the game’s only goal.

Throughout the match, Mexico maintained control but found it challenging to break through the well-organized South Korean defense to create open scoring opportunities. Fortunately for Mexico, goalkeeper Raúl Rangel played a crucial role in safeguarding their lead. He made two critical saves in the final stages of the game, first thwarting a powerful header from Cho Gue-sung and then quickly reacting to block Yang Hyun-jun’s subsequent attempt.

With this victory, Mexico secured the top position in their group, having won both of their initial matches. This assured their progression to the Round of 32. Javier Aguirre, Mexico’s head coach, commended his players for their discipline and composure, noting these attributes as indicators of the team’s maturation. However, he acknowledged the need for more creativity in attack despite the successful outcome.

On the other hand, South Korea still has a chance to move forward in the tournament. A favorable result in their upcoming final group match against South Africa could see them through. Nevertheless, the loss to Mexico highlighted ongoing difficulties in their offensive play, setting the stage for a critical encounter as they aim for a spot in the next round.
