During his inaugural address at the United Nations General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco emphasized Mexico’s dedication to maintaining national sovereignty while actively engaging in multilateral cooperation. Speaking on behalf of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Velasco highlighted Mexico’s ability to forge international partnerships without compromising its sovereignty, advocating for cooperation that respects territorial integrity and the self-determination of nations.
Velasco underscored Mexico’s social policies and efforts in poverty reduction, linking these initiatives to a broader belief that sustainable peace is rooted in social development. He also noted a reported decline in homicide rates as part of Mexico’s progress. On international issues, Velasco reaffirmed support for a two-state solution in the Middle East, recognizing Palestine’s right to secure borders, and reiterated Mexico’s opposition to the US embargo on Cuba, pledging continued humanitarian aid.
Strengthening international partnerships was a key focus, with Velasco engaging in discussions with foreign officials from Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru. His meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares covered bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation, including preparations for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid.
In talks with Peru, Velasco addressed the reopening of embassies following restored diplomatic relations, with both countries committing to dialogue and mutual respect. Other discussions explored economic cooperation, strategic investment, UN reform, and trade relations, alongside efforts to bolster multilateral institutions.
