In a recent development surrounding the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Mexico has stepped in to host Iran’s national football team, following a reported decision by the United States not to accommodate the squad during the tournament. While Iran’s matches in the group stage are set to take place in the U.S., the Mexican government has agreed to serve as the host for Iran’s team, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirming that FIFA reached out after U.S. authorities declined the overnight hosting request.

The Iranian team’s new training base will be located in Tijuana, Mexico, conveniently situated near the U.S. border and close to San Diego, California. This adjustment was officially confirmed by FIFA with the release of team base camp locations for the event. Initially, Iran had planned to set up its World Cup headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. However, complications arose due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East and concerns related to U.S. sanctions on Iran, prompting a shift in plans.

President Sheinbaum expressed that Mexico is fully capable of accommodating the Iranian team and is actively working with FIFA to iron out the logistical details ahead of the tournament. The decision to relocate to Tijuana was also seen as a strategic move to circumvent any potential visa issues, according to Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj. He mentioned that the team would now be able to travel directly to Mexico on Iran Air flights, simplifying travel arrangements.

The U.S. State Department has stated that Iran is still welcome to participate in the World Cup, although it refrained from providing specific reasons for why the Iranian team will not be based in the U.S. during the competition. The World Cup, a prestigious event in the world of sports, will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, running from June 11 to July 19.
